New Maritime Minister Tours the Iconic Hydraulic Tower

On Friday 25th June 2021, Maritime Minister, Robert Courts MP, visited Wirral Waters as part of an official tour of the Liverpool City Region.

The Minister visited the iconic Grade II listed Hydraulic Tower, an architectural beacon at the heart of the Wirral Waters development which will provide an industry led, national base for marine engineering research and development and survival training as well as business accelerator space for the marine sector.

The Maritime Knowledge Hub, a partnership project with Peel L&P, Mersey Maritime, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Universities, leading industry figures and Wirral Council, will focus on the decarbonisation of the marine sector, and presents a fantastic opportunity to develop jobs and skills in the growing maritime sector.

Richard Mawdsley, Director for Development at Peel L&P’s Wirral Waters, briefed the delegation on the amazing history of the building, the present situation, and the ambitious plans for its future. He commented:

“The pioneering regeneration we are undertaking at Wirral Waters can only be delivered through real collaboration.  I am very pleased that the Minister was able to see for himself not just the plans for this iconic building, but the team behind the project. Peel L&P, Wirral Council, Mersey Maritime and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority are all lined up to support this fantastic project that has job creation and economic growth at its heart.”

The visit was part of a series of events organised by Mersey Maritime to mark international ‘Day of the Seafarer’.  The day also included the Maritime Exchange conference which involved over 1,100 delegates.
