The first event, which took place on 5th October, provided a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to find out how they can benefit from the massive investment being made at Wirral Waters.
Construction firm GRAHAM, who is the main contractor for the £130m development, will hold further Supply Chain events over the coming weeks in order to increase the number of Wirral based businesses in their supply chain.
During the sessions, which are being run in partnership with Wirral Chamber of Commerce, GRAHAM will outline the opportunities available and show suppliers how they can benefit from its help to develop their own businesses. The events will include a presentation on the wider pipeline of works on the Wirral, round table discussions on their key priorities, information zones, and an opportunity to ‘meet the buyer’.
Miller’s Quay is Peel L&P’s cornerstone residential scheme at Wirral Waters and is the single biggest development to date at what is the UK’s largest and most sustainable regeneration project. The development will include 500 one and two-bedroom waterfront apartments, including 100 affordable new homes, and is expected to take 2.5 years to complete. Rents on the affordable homes will be a maximum of 80% of open market value, delivering significant social impact.
The construction of Miller’s Quay began in July when developer Peel L&P and their funding partner and long-term investor, Pension Insurance Corporation plc (‘PIC’), joined together with Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region; and Councillor Jeff Green, The Mayor of Wirral, to break ground on the new development.
In August, Peel L&P and GRAHAM joined forces with Wirral Met College, to engage over 400 students with the Miller’s Quay project so that they can benefit from this unique opportunity with access to a ‘real life’ classroom and a structured programme of activity to enrich their learning and prepare them for future employment in the modern construction industry.
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Peel L&P’s Wirral Waters, said: “Our partnership with Wirral Chamber will help us to engage with a much broader range of suppliers and trades so that we can make sure that the huge investment being made in this project will directly benefit the people and businesses of Wirral.
“The development of Miller’s Quay is already having a huge impact on local students and now we want to ensure that local businesses will also benefit, bringing significant social value to the local community and the local economy. At Wirral Waters we are committed to working with partners such as GRAHAM who share these values and we are looking forward to meeting more local suppliers at our forthcoming events.”
Peter Reavey, GRAHAM Regional Director, said: “We’re excited to be partnering with Wirral Chamber of Commerce to engage local contractors and suppliers on the Wirral Waters project. We have already met with some impressive businesses who will benefit from the employment opportunities available for them to learn, upskill, and help to deliver one of the UK’s largest regeneration schemes.”
Paula Basnett CEO at Wirral Chamber of Commerce said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Peel L&P and GRAHAM to ensure that all Wirral construction businesses and wider supply chain have an opportunity to be engaged with the latest Wirral Waters project at Miller’s Quay.
“The multi-million-pound development presents a real opportunity for Wirral businesses to harness. Our priority as a chamber is to ensure as many businesses as possible have the opportunity to be engaged and to develop an understand around how this development will benefit Wirral’s economy and wider communities.
“To achieve this, Wirral Chamber will be hosting a series of events that will feature round tables, meet the buyer events and informative presentations that empower our business community with the information they need to potentially benefit from this development.
“As Wirral continues to attract significant investment, driving local economic growth, it is a major priority for Wirral Chamber to continue engaging with all our businesses to help them achieve their ambitions and be part of Wirral’s exciting future.”
