Level 3 students were able to develop their knowledge during a site visit to Hythe, a new Grade A office development within Wirral Waters’ Four Bridges neighbourhood. Located next to the college’s construction campus, Hythe is due for completion in late 2021.
During the session, students saw first-hand the initial phases of construction during site tours, and developed their employability skills through learning how to approach potential employers and how to network effectively within the industry.
Richard Mawdsley, Director of Development for Peel L&P’s Wirral Waters, said: “With the new Tower Road streetscape recently completed, transformational public realm works along Northbank onsite now, and the construction of Hythe progressing at pace, there are a huge range of learning experiences we can offer local people studying construction.
“Following on from the virtual learning experiences we facilitated during lockdown, having the students onsite and in the open air, witnessing the work going on and speaking with the experts involved, was great to see.
This is just the latest chapter in our partnership with Wirral Met College and we look forward to further expanding our engagement over the coming months and years.”
The College’s purpose-built construction campus is in a prime position within the Wirral Waters development and is dedicated to creating a workforce for the 30-year master plan.
Working in an educational partnership with Wirral Met College, Peel L&P’s Wirral Watersgives students opportunities such as work experience placements, apprenticeships, and further site visits across the Wirral Waters development to help them prepare for future employment.
Sue Higginson, Principal and CEO of Wirral Met College, said: “Our Wirral Waters Campus is an iconic building in that it is the first, new build facility in this regeneration area. Now it is full of students developing skills to work in the industry there is no better way to do this than be being on ‘site’, working alongside the employers that are helping us design and deliver so much more than is required for qualifications alone, a competent, confident workforce”.
